Executive leadership development happens best with coaching. That's not to say that graduate programs, executive leadership training seminars, CEO Groups and other ways of developing aren't good. They can be great and they can be awful. But either way, nothing takes the place of one-on-one executive coaching and consulting.
One of the problems with more formal learning situations is that they depend on case studies. There's certainly alot to be learned from history but the only thing case studies can teach is what was done in the past. In these times, that's simply not enough.
Today's leaders face unique challenges that their predecessors couldn't have dreamed of. Whether they include case studies or methodologies, the stuff of text books is outdated by the time they get to distribution. They can be helpful to be sure but they can't address specific issues the way that executive development coaching can.
Your investment in executive leadership training programs should always be leveraged by executive development coaching. Otherwise, there's no way that senior executive development can be fully implemented, no matter how good your executive development training is.
