Executive leadership development always needs a personal development component because it's delusional to think your personal issues don't come to work with you. And it's equally delusional to believe that just because you're the executive that other people just have to put up with your unresolved hangups; or that just because you've produced a lot of success that your potential isn't severely compromised by not developing the person who is filling the executive's shoes.
When you adopt success methods and strategies without doing the personal foundational work, you can produce some good results but those results usually come at a cost - sometimes in retention, work/life balance, lack of vitality in you and your team, stakeholder loyalty... Results based on getting the methods right are shaky in terms of sustainability because they aren't grounded in the values that lay at the core of what makes good leaders great.
Coaching is not therapy but good coaching is highly personalized which means it's tailored to the whole person. The benefits of executive coaching are clearly documented (see studies link below). But too often executive coaching, especially by larger executive coaching companies, is formulaic and superficial. Even then, the data is clear that executive coaching consulting pays off.
But, when you work with someone who understands the value of highly personal executive coaching, you've got a more powerful partner for realizing the highest return on investment in the benefits of executive coaching. When you work with someone with the life experience and credentials to meet you on the inside and work with you to bring your success forward from your core, you have a much greater shot at not only sustaining your success better but also at creating the kind of success that leaves legacies.
